Kinder in Europa (Children in Europe)

While working abroad in the early 1980s, on assignment for major international magazines, Somoroff left the studio and photographed children in a dozen countries, over the course of six years. These heartfelt portraits tug at one’s heart with their directness and honesty.

Working closely with some of the most prominent individuals of European culture of the day (Milan Kundera, Karl Lagerfeld, Derek Jarman, Hanna Schygulla, and Claudio Abbado, to name just a few), and at the urging of renowned psychoanalyst Alice Miller, Somoroff published this reportage in the late 1980s.

The resulting Kinder in Europa (Children of Europe, Nicolai, 1988 in German and English) received the Kodak book prize that same year and was greeted by critics with vast critical acclaim.
